  • Bosc Monitor
Scientific Name: Varanus exanthematicus
  • Notes
First described in 1792 by French scientist Louis Augustin Guillaume Bosc, hence how the common name Bosc Monitor came about. Also known as Savannah Monitor due to the habitat they inhabit in the wild. Found in Sub-Saharan Africa north of the equator, it is also known to occur in West Africa through to southwestern Ethiopia and northwestern Kenya.

The scientific name of the genus Varanus has been latinized, derived from the Arabic word 'waran' meaning monitor. The species name exanthematicus is derived from two Greek words 'exanthema' meaning eruption and 'mata' which means idle and likely refers to the appearance of the scales.
